Independence or Freedom?

As I sit here looking at photos of fireworks from Juneau’s Independence Day celebrations, I’m struck by how much the fog and clouds obscured our view. That leads me to thinking, “How many of us really stop to think about what the word Independence really stands for…

Webster’s Dictionary defines it as:  “Freedom from control or influence of another or others; the state or quality of being independent; freedom from dependence; exemption from reliance on,or control by,others; self-subsistence or maintenance; direction of one’s own affairs without interference”…

This is a very important concept to remember! One of the privileges that we have as residents of the United States is that we are all protected by the freedoms granted us in the Bill of Rights: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of assembly, to name a few…

Just as our view of the fireworks show was obscured by the fog, so it seems that our freedoms are becoming less and less clear as well…

Contemplating the definition, “direction of one’s own affairs without interference”, I feel that one area where we don’t seem to have this freedom is in the arena of health!

Why do I say this?

Do you have the freedom to choose any health care practitioner that you wish? Maybe on the surface, you may feel that you do. However, your insurance plan may dictate otherwise…

Do you have the freedom to choose whatever method of care that you wish?  Perhaps, but try to go against the recommendations of your physician, and see what happens!

There are cases where children have been removed from their family home because some public entity decided that the parents were abusing them because they refused to vaccinate them or because they fed them a raw, vegan diet…

There are doctors who are vilified and discredited by their own organizations simply because their research and/or treatments go against convention and are too effective. This potentially threatens the profits of the pharmaceutical industry, not to mention showing up the inadequacies of our healthcare system…

So this week as we celebrate the 237th anniversary of the official adoption of the Declaration of Independence, I am claiming My Liberty.  I emancipate Myself from medical tyranny!  I CHOOSE to be the Captain of my Ship called Health…

And I urge YOU to do the same!
